Reading at Home

The most important factor in your child’s
success as a reader is the time spent at home
reading.

As with anything that is new, the only way to improve is to practice, practice, practice.

First graders are expected to read at least 20 minutes, 5 times per week.

This does not include any time you spend reading to your child.

It can include time spent practicing sight words, particularly in the beginning of the school year.

If 20 minutes is too tedious in the beginning, feel free to break it up into two 10 minutes blocks of time.

All children will be bringing home reading
material that is appropriate for his/her level.
